A Report On English Translation Of Essays In Light Of Hermeneutic Theory Of Compensation

Nowadays,translation has become an indispensable bridge for cultural exchange.Many excellent literary works have been translated every year,which gives the source language a second life undoubtedly.Therefore,with the introduction of philosophical hermeneutics,it is indubitable to widen the analysis of literary translation.This thesis tends to present the proposition of "translation is a process of understanding and interpreting" to discuss and conduct a comprehensive review on the hermeneutics theory,and it also points out the necessary connection between the theory and literary translation.From the perspective of hermeneutics,literary translation,as the dialectic unity of openness and closeness,is endowed with an inherent feature of interpreting.There are still some limitations of its interpretation,so it is absolutely impossible to realize a complete objective interpretation.The author selects the famous cultural essay Small towns in the south of Yangtze River in Yu Qiuyu’s Cultural Odyssey as the object of translation practice in this paper.Firstly,this thesis gives a brief introduction to the objectives of the practice and the report,significance of the report and the structure of the report.Secondly,it introduces the background information of the task,an overview of Steiner’s Hermeneutic translation theory and delivers a relevant study of Small towns in the south of Yangtze River and its translation as well;then guided by Steiner’s interpretation translation theory,the author points out that “imbalance” phenomena is inevitable in understanding and translating;and makes an analysis of how to restore the balance between the two texts,namely at culture and art level.Furthermore,some reflections will be put forward for reference and further study during the process of translating cultural essays.Finally,this thesis makes a comprehensive conclusion and positively stresses the significant guidelines of Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory in translating cultural essays,and problems the author encounters in translating and limitations of the present study are also involved.
