On The Translation Of The Literary Theory The Geocriticism:Truth,Fiction,Space From The Perspective Of Compensation

The loss of meaning caused by cultural differences is inevitable in cross-cultural communication.As messengers of cross-cultural communication,translators are bound to face such problem,and they must overcome it for successful communication.But how?In the 1960s and 1970s,terms related to "compensation" appeared in western articles dealing with the theory of translation.In the 1980s,some western scholars developed the concept of "compensation".Later,more scholars offered more detailed definitions and proposals about "how to compensate".In the translation of literary theory works,the compensation for terminologies and domain knowledge is particularly important.On the recommendation of her mentor,the author translated the Chapter II of The Geocriticism:Truth,Fiction,Space(hereinafter referred to as The Geocriticism),and has deepened her understanding of this issue.Written by Portland Westphal,founder of the "geocriticism" and professor at the University of Limoges in France,The Geocriticism systematically explores the theory of "geocriticism".As a book on literary theory,Geocriticism is highly academic,and contains a lot of allusions,terminologies and citations.In order to convey the intended meanings in the source text as much as possible,the author adopted translator’s notes.However,in the application of translator’s notes,the author encountered the following two difficulties:Firstly,in the translation of literary theory works,in the face of a large amount of allusions,terminologies and citations,under what circumstances should we add a translator’s note?Secondly,how to ensure the quality of this note?Under the perspective of compensation in translation,the author has con sidered the above two questions and determined the final strategy.This paper is a translation report,which consists of four chapters:The first chapter introduces the translation task,including the introduction of the text source,the writer as well as the content and type of the text.It also puts forward the main issue discussed in this report:How should we make effective use of translator’s notes from the perspective of compensation in the translation of literary theory work?The second chapter systematically introduces the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation issues.The third chapter,which is the main part of this report,targets at the case analysis.The author reviews the development of the "compensation" concept in the first place,pointing out that although the principles of the "compensation" are still inconclusive,it actually constitutes an important strategy for translators to compensate for the meaning of source texts.Then,form the perspective of compensation,the author discusses criteria and principles of using translator’s notes with specific cases.On one hand,the author proposes 3 criteria of whether there should be a translator’s note.On the other hand,3 principles of using translator’s notes are proposed in accord with contents,forms and style of these notes.Finally,the fourth chapter makes a systematic summary of the translation process and theoretical thinking,so as to provide a reference for the author’s future translation practice.
