A Study On The Approaches Applied In The Press Conference Interpreting From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

With its almost 40 years of Reform and Opening-up policy,China has achieved fast development in various fields and its international status has also improved significantly;meanwhile,it has caught people’s eyes all over the world.Every year,the press conference held by the Chinese government attracts many domestic and foreign journalists to attend and report it.The press conference is a very formal and solemn occasion,on which the Chinese government exchanges and communicates with renowned journalists from abroad and China.In the press conference,what the spokesman or speaker says could be regarded as the Chinese government’s attitudes and opinions.Therefore,the press conference strictly demands accurate interpretation,which poses a big challenge for the interpreter.Usually,in order to accurately and appropriately deliver the speaker’s meaning to recipients,interpreters will take some measures to help themselves in PCI.This thesis takes descriptive methodology and explanatory methodology as its research methods.Based on the interpretive theory and from the perspective of one of its core ideas--“deverbalization” from the triangular model,this thesis focuses on finding out what approaches the interpreter has employed in PCI in order to “deverbalize” the meaning of the speech and catch the real sense of the speaker.This thesis aims at providing interpreters and students majoring in interpreting with some guidance in real practice.By analyzing some typical examples from the materials of PCI in 2016 and 2017,the author summarizes the approaches frequently employed by the interpreter and they are: information explanation,information supplement,information omission,information integration,sentence reconstruction and free interpreting.As a conclusion,it might be a meaningful attempt to probe into the interpreting approaches employed in PCI from the perspective of IT.The approaches may serve as guidance for interpreters in their interpreting practice to improve their performances.
