Tamils are a minority in Sri Lanka, and Sinhalese are the main ethnic group in Sri Lanka. After the independence of Sri Lanka, because the government implemented the unequal national policy towards Sinhalese and Tamils, the contradiction between Sinhale and Tamil was prominent. The Tamils began a separatist movement after repeated setbacks in their struggle for national rights. This paper combs the background of Tamil separation movement and its historical process after Sri Lanka independence, analyzes the influencing factors of Tamil separation movement, the influence caused by it and the Sri Lankan government's coping strategy. The paper includes introduction and four chapters. The introduction introduces the reason and significance of the topic and the research status of Tamil people at home and abroad. The first chapter introduces the background of Tamil separatism in Sri Lanka, the general situation of Tamil people, the national policy during British colonial period and the relationship between Sinhalese and Tamils.Chapter two expounds a series of unequal national policies carried out by the Sri Lankan government after independence, and probes into the process of Tamil separatism. The third chapter combs the development process of Sri Lankan Tamil separatist movement, and analyzes the reason of its evolution.Chapter four mainly discusses the international and domestic influence caused by Tamil secession movement and summarizes the strategies adopted by Sri Lanka government. This study holds that the divide-and-rule policy implemented during the British colonial rule was the historical origin of the Tamil separatist movement after Sri Lanka's independence.A series of unequal policies implemented by the Sri Lankan government are the real reasons for the Tamil separatist movement. After nearly 20 years of parliamentary struggle without any substantial results, the Tamil party turned to the path of secession in the mid-1970 s and put forward the goal of independent statehood.A number of Tamil militant groups have also been formed and organized against the Sri Lankan government of terrorist violence.By the mid-1980 s,with the intensification of the conflict between Sinhalese and Tamils, the Tamil armed group put the goal of independent statehood into practice, and the violent activities of the Tamils escalated into a movement of complete secession of the country, and the Tamil separatist movement evolved into a civil war.During this period,India's intervention, the influence of the international community and the sustained decline in Sri Lanka's economic development were the main factors leading to the development and change of the Tamil separatist movement.
