English writing is an important output process in English learning,and plays an important role in English learning.English writing ability is one of the five cores of English teaching,but how to write both grammatical and meaningful sentences,as well as make independent sentences cohesive and coheient in a text for high school students is not a simple thing.Cohesion,as an important feature of a unity of discourse,plays an important role in textual coherence.In recent years,the study of cohesive devices has become a hot topic in the Second Language Acquisition.Many linguistic experts and scholars have studied the relationship between cohesive devices and writing quality both at home and abroad,but the views are inconsistent.Moreover,most of studies focus on the college students,with few concerns on the high school students writing.Taking Halliday&Hasan cohesion theory as the foundation,this paper focuses on the following questions: What are the cohesive devices used by senior high school students in their English writing? What is the main influence of using cohesive devices on the quality of English writing.And investigate the importance of cohesive devices both from senior teachers and students by interviewing and questionnaire.The author randomly selected 300 Changchun 2017 second diagnostic test c ompositions from three high schools in Changchun.After removing the composi tion scored 0,according to the standard for evaluation,the author selects 103 c opies of high packet compositions,103 copies of low packet compositions,thes e 206 compositions as the main samples of this study.First of all,according to Halliday&Hasan's classification of cohesive devices,the statistics of cohesive devices in the two packets is conducted;secondly,SPSS software is used for stu dying the correlation between the number of cohesive devices in writing and wr iting quality.The author also uses questionnaires to investigate the senior high s chool students' understangding on the cohesive devices as well as their usage.At the same time,interviews are conducted to investigate English teachers in hi gh school.It has been found that high packet comositions use more cohesive devices than low packet compositions,especially grammatical cohesive devices.It can be seen that the number of cohesive devices used in English compositions is positively related to the quality of compositions.This study attempts to provide English teachers with some inspirations for writing instruction,and helps to strengthen the use of cohesive devices in the process of writing.
