Xiong Shili’s theory of Xi and Pi adhere to the basic purpose of “oneness between substance and function”.The “oneness between substance and function” is not baseless, and it formed on the basis of criticizing the Buddhism and Confucianism. On the one hand,he criticized the substance and function of Madhyamika and Cittamatra,on the other hand,he explained the substance and function of the book of Changes,so he finished the system of“oneness between substance and function”.Hsin weishih lun of classical Chinese is the sign of the formation of “oneness between substance and function”.After that, his philosophical system was more progressional and developmental. From the theory of Xi and Pi,what he wants to explain is the existence of all things in the universe, and he want to explain the noumenon through phenomenon. In addition,Xiong Shili calls”Pi” as the spirit, and calls “Xi” as the material.Oneness between substance and function, and oneness between the spirit and the material as well. From the evolution of the universe, there is a cosmological spirit. This is a process that the spirit is coming out from inorganic to organic matter or from plant to animal to human.Xiong Shili divide the heart into conscience and mentality. The conscience is transcendental, and the mentality is experiential. The value of life lies in continuous recovering the conscience by learning and improving oneself and intelligible anschauung.
