The vocabulary plays a quite important role in English learning. But many students have problems in memorizing vocabularies,so teachers need to help students memorize words effectively. There are many ways to memorize words, and as a supplement to vocabulary memory strategies, the word associative memory strategies including the sound associations, morphological associations, word meaning associations and imaginary associations in this study can be used for English beginners when they memorize words. This paper mainly studies the effects of the word associative memory strategies on junior middle school students’ vocabulary memory. The following two research questions are formulated in this study:(1)What is the present status of memory strategies used by the students in English vocabulary memory in junior high school?(2)Can word associative memory strategies help students memorize words quickly and have good effects on word memory retention? In order to find the answers to all the questions above, this study needs to carry out an experiment to prove its effect by training the students in the experimental class to learn the word associative memory strategies. The subjects of this study were students in junior 1 from a private junior high school in Chengdu.According to the results of the entrance exam in that school, the class 7 was chosen as the experimental class and the class 9 was chosen as the control class. The training of word associative memory strategies was conducted only in the experimental class, and then the relevant data was obtained through dictation, vocabulary tests, questionnaires, and interviews.Through the above research and data analysis, the writer draws the following conclusions: 1.At present, most students memorize words mainly through rote memory, the phonetic transcription and phonics, but few students use word associative memory strategies.2.The word associative memory strategies can help students memorize words quickly and have good effects on memory retention. But it should be known the word associative memory strategies are not omnipotent. They can only be used as a supplement to the vocabulary memory strategies and provide more choices for learners, especially for English beginners.Due to the limited time and lack of samples, this study still has many defects, which need to be further studied.
