| The translation of UN documents targeting the general public requires special attention on cohesion for the appropriate rendering of the thematic ties and factual information. This thesis analyzes examples from the translation of Basic Facts about the United Nations with theories of textual cohesion. It summarizes problems in thematic coherence and transition as well as accuracy of information caused by inappropriate use or lack of cohesive devices.By comparing the initial translation and the reviewed version, this thesis analyzes how to realize appropriate cohesion, including adding cohesive devices, selecting accurate ones without ambiguity, and repositioning cohesive devices according to the narrative structure in different circumstances. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a little reference on the appropriate use of cohesive devices in the E-C translation of UN documents. |
