English learning emphasizes on the capabilities of four aspects,namely listening,speaking,reading and writing,among which listening topped the ranking list.As an efficient way of language information input,listening plays a basis and key role in English learning.It is known that junior middle school is the starting point for students to learn and explore English;therefore,it is of great significance to study the learning methods and skills of English listening in junior middle school for students' consolidation and improvement of English ability.In order to explore effective teaching methods of junior high school English listening,and to enhance students' confidence and interest in listening learning,this paper introduces the figure-ground theory and selects the prediction strategy for a study.The principles of salience,separation and the like of figure-ground theory can steer students to grasp the main information such as titles,keywords and central sentences and etc.for reasonable predictions.This thesis adopts the experimental method to carry on the comparative teaching research.Through the testing method,two student collections of group A and group B were selected(the average score of students in group A was 60,and that of students in group B was 80).Then,students in each group were randomly divided into two parallel classes,four parallel classes in total.Next,by implementing 16 weeks of investigation,testing and training on students of the four parallel classes,the final conclusion is drawn from the comparison data.The experimental results indicate that the prediction strategy based on the figure-ground theory can develop a wonderful teaching effect in junior high school English class,especially for students with poor performance.After a semester of training,the overall enhancement of students in the experimental class originally with poor performance is more obvious.At the same time,it also shows that teachers' correct teaching and guidance mode is extremely crucial for students to better understand and master the relevant knowledge.This study has made an attempt to integrate the figure-ground theory and prediction strategy and apply it in junior high school English listening teaching,which has a certain reference for future further studies in the field of linguistics and English teaching.Meanwhile,the present study also constructs strong support for the enrichment and development of English listening teaching methods.However,due to the influence of objective or subjective factors,there are some unavoidable limitations in this study,for instance,the lack of strict control of the impact factors of individual experiments causes the inaccuracy up to a point of the conclusion,besides,the short period of time makes the experimental results unable to be popularized and the design of several individual experiment processes need to be perfected.Therefore,in future research,efforts should be taken to avoid these problems and develop more rigorous and versatile researches.
