A Report On Translation Of Embedded Noun Phrase Of Patent's Claims

With the strengthening of China's scientific and technological innovation and the increasing exchanges between countries in the world,enterprises introducing foreign advanced technology and products inputted into the foreign markets become frequent.When enterprises apply for foreign patents,it is necessary to safeguard their own interests,but also to prevent patent infringement.Consequently the translation of English patent literature is particularly important.The claim defines a range of protection given by a patent or patent application in scientific terms,which exerts a critical part in patent applications and in patent litigation.Moreover,the text of the claim is a series of numbered expressions,or more precisely,a noun phrase.Therefore,the author takes the claim of electronic and communication patent applied by Apple Inc.in 2016 as the translation object,and explores the translation rules of embedded noun phrases.According to the specific definition of the embedded noun phrase,its types and structures are studied and its translation methods and techniques are summarized.The conclusion of this report is that if the embedded noun phrase is a clause in a claim or serves as an object in a clause,division is applicable;if the embedded noun phrase is a subject in a clause,inversion is applicable.
