The present report is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of the illustrated book The Traditional Art of Nianhua. The author participated in the translation project and undertook the Chapter Six to the Chapter Eleven of the project. In terms of a discourse based on pictorical materials,in addition to the translation commitment to the textual resources, picture interpretation capability is of great importance for a qualified translator as translation practice not merely calls for linguistic skills but also multiliteracy ability, which stands for the translators'performance in promoting cultural communication. In this report, the author applies some case analyses to the multimodal discourse. To be specific, the author carries out some discussions on those project cases on the basis of their representative meaning, interactive meaning, and compositional meaning in accordance with relevant theories of Visual Grammar.Besides, the author takes into consideration a translator's profession by investigating overall language competence and ethics, especially the integrating responsibilities one must shoulder as a language user,a picture interpreter and a cultural communicator. In a nutshell, the report is written with inspiration to other translators, thus helping them to enrich their practical strategies and make more satisfying translation performance in the future.
