| Little Women is a novel written by American writer Louisa May Alcott.Since its publication,the work has become popular among the readers both at home and abroad.It has been translated into more than ten languages,as well as over 40 Chinese translations.However,this study finds that the existing researches in China only focus on several translations.No study has been conducted on the translations by Martha E.Pyle and his assistant Shen Junying,as well as by Wang Hongsheng published in 1925 and 1936 respectively.Therefore,the thesis intends to compare those two Chinese translations from the perspective of translator's subjectivity,taking the ideology,the Christian environment and the identity of the translators into consideration,and explore how two translators play their role in translations.This paper is comprised of six parts.Chapter One briefly introduces the research origin,the relevant researches on Little Women,research questions and the significance of this paper.Chapter Two presents the theoretical framework,discussing the influence of ideology on translation studies as well as the rethinking of translator's subjectivity.Chapter Three gives a detailed description of Little Women,two Chinese translators' background information,and the possible factors affecting translator's subjectivity.Chapter Four and Five discusses the differences in two translations on religious factors and gender factors respectively from the perspective of translator's subjectivity by analyzing two translations and giving specific examples.Chapter Six summarizes the study and reflects on its limitations.Based on the comparative analysis of two translations,the study finds that,deeply influenced by Christian environment,Wang Hongsheng didn't translate all introductions of Christianity to readers,but played his role in translation by deleting and domesticating Christian expressions.While the missionary Martha E.Pyle adopted the strategy of explication and addition to translate them and strove to gain more recognition from the Chinese readers by creating the traditional Chinese female image,and imitating the narrative of traditional Chinese novels.When translating the Catholic elements,Martha E.Pyle deleted them due to the differences and disputes between Protestantism and Catholicism.In addition,for the description of female activities or subtle emotion of figures in the novel,Wang Hongsheng,restricted by traditional Chinese ideas,translated them with a prominent derogatory sense,while Martha E.Pyle,as a woman,is more sensitive to express female emotion through addition and rewriting. |
