In recent years, competitive and far-sighted Chinese publishers are keeping in step with the trend of scientific and technological development, and have introduced a large number of original popular science books overseas. Most of the books then will be translated into Chinese for communicating cultures between China and the West. This can not only cater for the needs of readers in different ages and knowledge levels, but also lead to the boom of domestic popular science translation to a certain extent. Our Mathematical World is a set of popular science books published by National Geographic, and each book is written by top scholars in their own professions. It aims to take mathematics as a bridge to let readers understand the world more clearly. The Golden Ratio: The Beautiful Language of Maths is an extraordinary one in this collection, and the author is Professor Fernando Corbalan from Spain. In this book, mathematics and everyday life are closely interrelated in easy-to-understand words, and the knowledge on various subjects such as socialogy, history and art are explained in detail.Under the guidance of my tutor,I have completed the translation task including fiveUnder the guidance of my tutor,I have completed the translation task including five chapters and the appendix at the end of the book.In the first five chapters, professor Corbalan deconstructs the golden ratio for readers from different angles through plain and simple words. In view of this, during the processing of such information-type texts, the original content should be modified under the premise of accurate expressions which are in line with the author’s intentions,so that the target-language readers can read smoothly, which is consistent with Newmark’s communicative translation strategy focusing on the transmission of the original information and the priority of the reading effects obtained on the readers of the original. In the appendix, the author selects several chapters of English translation from three Western math masterpieces, which allow readers to appreciate the mathematical language expressions and styles in ancient times. Therefore, the translation of this part should manage to restore the original-language cultures for target-language readers.Consequently, the semantic translation strategy, paying attention to render the exact contextual meaning of the original,is supposed to be adopted. The translation of The Golden Ratio aims to provide other translators with the experience and theoretical application of translating popular science texts.Different translation strategies should be exercised flexibly according to different types of texts to achieve the expected goals, thus breaking the barriers of history, cultures and languages.
