Vocabulary teaching is a key part of language teaching process. It is a common problem faced by all teachers how to efficiently teach students to master the vocabulary of a second language. The Total Physical Response(TPR)approach expounded in this paper is based on the theory of children's first language acquisition and proposed in the 1960 s by the famous American psychologist James Asher.TPR places emphasis on teaching the second language through body language and advocates “listening first and speaking later” and creating interesting class activities,so that students can grasp the language knowledge unconsciously in a relaxed and pleasant classroom atmosphere.Since the Total Physical Response(TPR)approach was introduced to China, more and more teachers have adopted this method of teaching and achieved good teaching results.Through the review of HowNet,the author finds that this approach is widely used in the teaching process of primary school's second language acquisition, but the research on vocabulary teaching is slightly scarce. The author of this paper combines her teaching experience at the Confucius Institute in the UK and the classroom observations in domestic primary schools to pose the research questions: compared with the traditional vocabulary teaching methods can the Total Physical Response approach improve the interest of primary school students in learning new words of a second language. This paper consists of six parts. The first part mainly introduces the research background, research purpose and methods used in the research process. The second part elaborates the connotation of the Total Physical Response approach, its characteristics, status and theoretical basis of research both domestic and overseas,as the theoretical foundation for this paper. The third and fourth parts of this paper respectively cite the domestic and overseas cases of the Total Physical Response teaching in second language acquisition and analyze the teaching cases. The fifth part mainly compares the application of the Total Physical Response approach to the domestic and overseas vocabulary teaching of second language and proposes problems and improvement measures. In the end,the paper concludes that the Total Physical Response approach has more advantages than traditional vocabulary teaching methods in helping learners to acquire the vocabulary of another language. When adopting the Total Physical Response approach,we should value the reform and innovation, using them in combination with different teaching methods to accomplish the teaching objectives in listening, speaking, reading and writing. This paper has taken the advantages of the Total Physical Response approach in vocabulary teaching process by using the literature research method, the classroom observation method, the interview method, the case analysis method and the comparison method.
