The need for liaison interpreters has increased with globalization.Student liaison interpreters, who are largely female, play a very important part.Gender difference might have influences on the role of student liaison interpreters, which however hasn't been studied in depth.Studies on the particular role of student liaison interpreters,as well as studies on the correlation between gender and interpreters'role are to be conducted. Thus,a study on the role of student liaison interpreters through the gender perspective would make its due contribution to the interpretation theory and the "role" theory in social studies.Based on the previous studies, this thesis clarified the definition of "liaison interpretation","gender" and "role",and discussed the correlations of the three. In light of the three aspects in "role" theory, this thesis conducted an empirical research on the social expectation,self-expectation and interpretation practice of student liaison interpreters. The thesis has come to three conclusions:1)Gender difference does have influences on the role of student liaison interpreters.2)The influences are multilateral and could be overlapping with one another, thus could shape a comprehensive role of a student liaison interpreter. However, some influences are exclusive to one specific gender.3)Gender influences on student liaison interpreters reflect the general social expectation on gender, which might affect student liaison interpreters' practice negatively.
