This project report is based on the translation experience of the translator on the excerpt of The Law of Sex Discrimination.Through analyzing several cases decided by the U.S.Supreme Court, the excerpted part mainly shows the process of eliminating gender discrimination in American society by the U.S.Supreme Court,in which the Supreme Court has gradually established a review standard applicable to gender-based laws in accordance with the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S.Constitution in the course of hearing cases.Feudal China saw long-time and severe discrimination against females. And as an important topic in modern China’s social development, sex discrimination remains a serious issue even in the environment of market economy in China today.Sex discrimination still has its impact deeply rooted in the Chinese culture, although Chinese females have won themselves equal rights in many aspects. The translation of this book about the law of sex discrimination of the U.S.aimed at spreading the legal knowledge on sex discrimination and calling for the improvement of China’s legal protection on gender equality as well as the further awareness of females in China of their rights. The report is designed into four parts. The first part is a brief introduction to the background of the project and the second follows to give another briefing on the translation process.A case study on the key difficulties the translator encountered during the translation at respectively lexical, syntactic and textual levels is presented in Chapter 3,Quality Control, along with the translator’s solutions to them under the guidance of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence. And the last is the Conclusion of the translator’s thinking and unsolved translation problems.Through the translation, the translator has found that the functional equivalence theory is effective to help the translator render the source text into the target, since it focuses on the delivery of both content and form of the original text to readers, and thus meets the requirement of legal translation.Meanwhile, the translator has gained valuable lessons about legal translation, which is useful for his career in the future.
