The Spanish translation manuscript of The Four Books by Michele Ruggieri is the earliest translation of the Chinese classics currently known by the academic community. It is a landmark translation in the history of Chinese and Western exchanges, and is also a precious manuscript with historical and cultural values. This manuscript was presented to the Spanish King Felipe Ⅱ by Michele Ruggieri(1543-1607)in the late Ming Dynasty for his understanding of Chinese thoughts and political ideas. He has been privately treasured in Spanish Royal Archives, and it was not until 2016 that the translation was rediscovered and published, making it truly recognized by international academics. There are very few special studies on Michele Ruggieri in the current academic circles, even fewer people can pay attention to this manuscript of the Spanish Four Books and do special research. At present,is Julian Zarco, who has compiled and commented on the translation, and second is Thierry Meynard,SJ.There is still a deep excavation value in the manuscript text. This paper attempts to use the method of translation history research to analyze the historical literature and the text of the translation.I hope that the author can contribute a little to the correct name of the sinological status of Ruggieri. The main contents and research methods of the thesis include:Ⅰ.Historical documents part:Through the combining of the translator’s identity and the background of translated book, the author focuses on the historical figures closely related to the translator and historical events occurring before and after the translation, and determines the causal link between the translated book and the historical events.Ⅱ.Text analysis part:Combining the translator’s era and cultural background, the target audience and the purpose of translation, the author grasped the translator’s transformation of concept in the translation process and compared the key words in the annotation, then summarizes Ruggieri’s early cross-cultural translational tendencies and tactics in translation activities. On the other hand, combining the vast background of the history of the relationship between China and Spain, the author analyzed the unique value and great contribution of the translation in its era.Translation itself is a conversation.Through this Spanish manuscript translation of The Four Books,we saw not only the communication between the translator and the text, but also a cultural exchange for seeking common ground while reserving differences under the care of the "adaptation" strategy the Western Christian worldview and the time-honored Neo-Confucian School have carried out.The cognition of heterogeneous culture presented in the ancient translations still has reference significance in today’s world where multiple civilizations are highly collided and integrated.
