On Contemporary Significance Of Thematic Creation Of Watercolors

Looking back at the history of Chinese fine arts,the prominent status of thematic creation has remained pivotal in different periods.Whether in the period of the May Fourth Movement,or in the period of Anti-Japanese War,or in the period of Liberation War,or after the founding of the People’s Republic of China,or in the reform and opening up and the march into the new century,thematic creation is prevalent in the process of eulogizing the Chinese nation,the great motherland and the people.However,compared with other paintings,thematic watercolors fail to attract people’s attention in recent days when the new artistic concepts are unprecedentedly diversified.People merely stick to the stereotype of watercolors as the “light music” in fine arts.Such stereotypical thinking results from various causes,which can be the watercolors themselves,or the watercolor creators,or the outsiders’ misunderstanding of watercolors.Starting from the theories of Chinese watercolors,this paper conducts in-depth research on the thematic creation of watercolors based on the author’s creative practice.First,the unique artistic values of Chinese watercolors are identified by studying the development course of Chinese watercolors.Second,their underlying epoch significance is explored through the comparative analysis of classical art creation.Third,through the combination of theories and creative practice,the exposition is unfolded based on the authors’ source materials collected in the period of working and living in the Anzihe Nature Reserve as well as their compilation,conception,and creation at the later stage.Finally,this paper summarizes the research conclusion and puts forward the expectation of future development.With the advent of a new era,it is of great significance to look back at the development of watercolors,envisage the future development of watercolors and explore the epoch significance of thematic creation of watercolors.It not only helps us better enrich the connotation and dimension of watercolors as an artistic language and explore the theories and practices of Chinese watercolors but also allows the viewers to appreciate their unique charm.More importantly,the watercolor artists must undertake the mission of times to create more works of art with the spirit of the times.In the current era of art serving the people,the creation of thematic watercolors is also endowed with new epoch significance,aesthetic characteristics,and artistic values.
