This is an English-Chinese translation report on excerpts from Part One of Reading Alice Munro,1973-2013 by Robert Thacker.Reading Alice Munro,1973-2013 is a collection of critical essays on Canadian short story writer Alice Munro‘s works and writing career. The book is a collection of literary criticism, and the translator is to explore the difficulties and methods in translating the source text. The major hurdles the translator met with in the translation task lie in three aspects: difficulties at lexical, syntactical and textual levels.Specifically, the difficulties include the translation of literary terms, nominalization, long and complicated sentences and literary texts.First,by adding an explanatory footnote or combining transliteration with free translation, the translator dealt with the translation of different types of literary terms.Second,by retaining nominalization or converting nominalization into verbal phrases, the translator handled the translation of nominalization structures in the literary criticism. Then, when translating long and complicated sentences, the translator followed the original sentence order or rearranged the sentence order according to the sentence structure and logic relation of the source text.In addition, when dealing with the translation of quotations from Alice Munro‘s short stories, the translator used the technique of free translation and amplification in some cases. The translation practice is meaningful, since it provides target readers a text with detailed information about Alice Munro‘s early writing career. Also, for readers engaged in the study of Munro‘s works and criticism, the target text is a source of abundant materials for research. Moreover, this report is aimed at providing practical references for the future translation of literary criticism in terms of translation difficulties and methods.
