| Since the reform and opening up,China’s economy has developed rapidly. In the booming development of various industries, the automobile industry has made great progress.China’s automobile products keep entering the global market, which is followed by an increase in the demand for translation of automobile manuals. The automobile manual is a manual for introducing various aspects of automobile such as performance, driving tips, maintenance knowledge and so on.It also serves as a practical scientific and technical text. The language of the automobile manual is simple and direct, and the content is objective. Its high quality translation helps manufacturers better introduce products and promote sales. From the perspective of the Skopos theory, this paper takes BYD F0 Automobile Manual as a case study, and studies the translation strategies of automobile manuals from three levels:vocabulary, sentence and discourse. At the lexical level, the translation strategies of technical terms and nominal structures such as literal translation, zero translation and word-class conversion are mainly discussed. At the syntactic level, the translation strategies of imperative sentences, passive sentences and elliptical sentences are explored such as voice conversion and omission. At the textual level, the translation strategies such as division, addition and sentence-sequence adjustments for maintaining text cohesion and coherence and objective language style are dealt with. The Skopos theory emphasizes that the translator should choose the appropriate translation strategies based on the analysis of the original text and the purpose of the intended function of the target text.Considering the purpose and function of automobile manuals, this thesis chooses the Skopos theory as the theoretical guidance. It aims to give some inspiration to the staff who are engaged in the translation of automobile manuals, and also intends to provide some reference for the translation practice and research of product manuals. |
