English idioms,often used in daily conversation and written English by native speakers,are an important part of the English language.The shortage of knowledge about idioms has erected a barrier between second language learners and native English speakers,preventing them from communicating with each other effectively.To Chinese college students,grasping English means that they should not only acquire accurate pronunciation and intonation,good grammar and adequate words,but also get familiar with a suitable amount of daily idioms.For Chinese learners of English as a second language,English idioms,the characteristics and usages of which are very different from those of words,need to be learned guided by scientific methods.Many scholars at home and abroad conducted studies on English idioms from several aspects,including English idioms' definitions,characteristics,classifications,and so on.Also,they put up with their views on idioms comprehension and idioms acquisition from different perspectives.Based on previous studies,the thesis tries to put forward a hypothesis called the S-S-P-C model for Chinese college students' English idiom acquisition,which means that English idioms can be understood and learned from the four perspectives of semantic analysis,syntactic analysis,pragmatics and culture.In order to test and rectify the S-S-P-C model,an empirical study was conducted,putting the model into practice in an English idioms teaching classroom for sophomores for one semester.The findings show that,by virtue of the reasonable English idioms acquisition S-S-P-C model,teachers and students are more interested in idioms,and teachers take delight in adopting the S-S-P-C model in their idioms teaching,which have promoted students'understanding and grasping idioms.The English idioms acquisition S-S-P-C model has not only theoretical significances but also practical values.Theoretically,it deepens researchers' understanding the rules of English idioms.Pedagogically,it facilitates students' grasping English idioms effectively and easily.
