The Image Of The Intellectuals In Fang Fang’s Novels

Fang Fang is a famous contemporary writer of China,and in 1987 published a novella "scenery" which caused a strong response and received attention from all circles.Fang Fang’s novels have a wide range of themes,and the novels of knowledge subjects are an important part of Fang Fang’s novels.This paper discusses the images of the intellectuals in Fang Fang’s novels.Fang Fang writes about the survival of the intellectuals from 1920 s and 1930 s to 21 th century with strong sense of social responsibility and keen insight,all of which constitute a grand intellectual narrative as a whole.This paper is divided into three parts.The first part discusses the reasons of Fang Fang’s creation of intellectuals’ novels.Fang Fang,born in a family of well educated,received the influence of the traditional culture from childhood,whose grandfather and father’s life experiences urge Fang Fang to pay close attention to the intellectuals’ living conditions and their destiny.Thanks to the four years experiences as stevedores and another four years experiences of university life,Fang Fang has formed a mature and rational mode of thinking,and the social experiences has made him think more deeply about society and human nature.In 1980 s,the active creation environment of writing provided Fang Fang a comfortable space for writing,and Fang Fang’s novel presented its mature and steady style in the middle and late period of 80 s.The second part discusses the image of the intellectuals in Fang Fang’s works.The different life course of grandfather and father gave Fang Fang profound enlightenment.Fang Fang’s personality and consciousness was deeply affected by Grandfather has an important impact,and Fang Fang’s father and the intellectuals of the same generation suffered a political blow,which also affected Fang Fang’s personality and spirit.In the social transition period,the next generation presented a different pursuit of value,part of the intellectuals struggling in the secular life to find a way through,some intellectuals giving up their ideals but pursuing fames and fortunes instead,and being addicted into the world of material desire,and there is also a part of the intellectuals,who is in thedifficult living condition yet adheres to their ideal.Fang Fang’s novels show the intellectual’s spiritual struggles in a period of almost a hundred year,and at the same time show the different living difficulties of the intellectuals in the social transition period.The third part discusses the characteristics of Fang Fang’s novel of knowledge which are of objective realism,rational calmness,the expression of tragic consciousness and other characteristics.The novels have high aesthetic value and ideological value,which embodies Fang Fang’s creative ideal and value criterion of seeking truths and realities.
