This paper is a Chinese-English translation practice report.The original text is selected from the Record of Chengdu’s Streets and Alleys,which is written by Yuan Tingdong.This book elaborates on the gates,bridges,rivers and streets and alleys of the old Chengdu city,including geographical location,historical culture,customs and other aspects.This kind of texts is featured by the objective description and reader-oriented style,with emphasis on the objective contents and the social impact as well as the value of the translation.Its purpose is to convey the accuracy of the factual contents.Therefore,the translator shall use the linguistic form that target readers can accept and regard the sentences or paragraphs as the translation units,to restore the facts as far as possible in the process of English translation.On the basis of faithfulness and under the guidance of communicative translation theory,the translator tries to apply various translation methods to conduct the translation practice,such as literal translation plus annotation,supplementary translation and conversion translation.Through this translation practice,the author has a new understanding of the translation about the informative text and writes this translation report based on the characteristics of the informative text,summarizing the difficulties existing in this translation practice,the translation methods,and the experience gained,so that this translation can well guide the future translation work and learning.
