Reading plays a vital role in foreign language teaching. However,in many senior high schools, especially schools in rural areas, there are still many problems in English reading teaching(e.g.students' low interest in reading, poor reading skills). In response to those problems, this paper aims to explore whether multimedia-assisted teaching can enhance learners' reading ability and their interest in reading.More specifically,it is intended to address the following three questions:(1)What is the status quo of multimedia use in English reading teaching in senior high schools?(2)Does multimedia-assisted teaching improve students' English reading ability?(3)Does multimedia-assisted teaching contribute to cultivate students' interest in English reading? The research was conducted in a rural school called Minxian No.3 Middle School, located in Gansu province.115 teachers and students in senior one participated in the study. In order to solve problems above, the author firstly adopted questionnaire survey and classroom observation to identify the current application of multimedia in senior high school.Secondly, faced with the deficiencies of multimedia-assisted reading teaching, the author conducted a three-month teaching experiment to observe whether multimedia-assisted reading teaching will affect students' reading ability.Taking class 7 as the experimental class, which is taught by systematic multimedia-assisted English reading teaching method, while choose class 8 as control class, which is taught by Mr.Yang, using traditional English reading teaching method.Except for the different teaching methods, the two classes have the same teaching materials and teaching time. Finally, the author sent out questionnaires to the 48 students in the experimental class to identify their feelings about multimedia-assisted reading teaching.Through one semester's research, using SPSS 22.0,the author draws the final conclusion:(1)multimedia-assisted teaching methods are widely used in senior high school classroom and most teachers and students hold a positive attitude to multimedia-assisted teaching.Meanwhile, there are also some problems existed in current reading class and the application of multimedia: overvalue the language knowledge;not clear the purpose of multimedia use and the use of "single media".(2)the application of multimedia to English reading teaching in senior high school contributes to improve students' reading ability.(3)multimedia-assisted reading teaching can stimulate students' interest in English reading.Based on the above results, the following teaching implications have been drawn:(1)the school should provide more modern educational technology training opportunities for teachers to improve thetheoretical level and operation of multimedia teaching.Professional English teachers should continue to update the knowledge of their multimedia English teaching;(2)Cooperation and communication between teachers should be strengthened in order to achieve better teaching effect;(3)Teachers should change the concept of reading teaching.
