Reading ability is one of the most important skills in English learning.On the one hand,it helps us obtain and absorb a large amount of written information.On the other hand,it is also the most important ability in the English test of the College Entrance Examination.At the same time,it also verifies the level of students’ English ability.An effective means of Reading ability specifically refers to the ability to understand,analyze,extract,infer,generalize,appreciate,judge and use information during and after reading.The College Entrance Examination mainly examines students’ ability to understand and infer details,generalize and summarize the main ideas,and guess and judge new words that appear in the reading comprehension.The cultivation and improvement of reading ability has always been one of the important tasks of high school English teaching.However,after many years of English teaching practice,the author found that most English teachers focus on the explanation of vocabulary and grammar in the reading articles and the training of reading exercises.With the continuous reform of new courses,the length of high school English reading will be even longer.The structure of the text will be more variable,and the content will be more difficult to understand.The traditional English reading teaching method can no longer meet the requirements that students need to meet after graduation.It is more necessary to explore new ways to effectively improve reading ability and find ways to improve reading.English newspapers should become excellent supplementary materials for the teaching of high school English reading due to their unique advantages such as strong timeliness,rich content,and wide range of subjects.Based on this,the author chooses the English newspaper “21st Century Teens Senior” as the research material for the teaching of high school English reading.This research mainly answers two questions.First,whether using English newspapers has an effect on students’ reading ability? Second,whether using English newspapers has an effect on students’ interest in reading?”The research takes the students of two classes of Taiyuan No.5 Middle School as the research objects,which are the experimental class and the control class.It is based on Krashen’s language input theory,Swain’s language output theory,schema theory and autonomous learning theory.Before and after the experiment questionnaire surveys were conducted on students to understand their reading ability,reading habits and reading needs,and reading ability tests were carried out on students before and after the experiment,so as to facilitate the comparison of data before and after the experiment to confirm the research questions in this article.The reading of newspapers and magazines during and after class was arranged and planned in detail.After two rounds of action research,the author randomly selected 15 students in the experimental class to conduct interview records to further understand students’ reading ability,reading interest and reading needs,and finally analyze and summarize the collected data.Through this research,it is found that: First,the use of English newspapers in high school English reading teaching is conducive to improving students’ reading ability,thereby improving reading grades.Teachers should introduce correct reading methods and reading strategies,which helps students to use the methods proficiently,improve reading efficiency and reading ability,and then improve grades.Second,the use of English newspapers in high school English reading teaching is conducive to improving students’ reading interest and developing good reading habits.Newspapers have their unique advantages,such as strong timeliness,rich content,rich pictures and texts,novel topics,and strong readability.Compared with traditional teaching materials,they can meet the diverse needs of students.In addition,newspapers are divided into several reading levels,which conform to the “i+1” theory,which can stimulate students’ interest in reading.This research has certain enlightenment for the teaching of English newspaper reading in high school.First,teachers should strengthen the cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability when teaching newspapers.Most high school students have poor self-consciousness.Teachers need to gradually cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability through methods such as ideological emphasis and guidance in daily teaching to improve the efficiency of using newspapers.Second,when teaching newspapers,teachers should take students’ interest in learning into account,so that students can feel the charm of English language,but also cultivate students’ ability to think in English,so that students can truly realize the benefits of newspaper reading and extracurricular reading so as to gradually cultivate the habit of lifelong reading for students.
