Vocabulary teaching plays a vital role in primary English teaching.However,it is still difficult to acquire vocabulary for primary school students,which seriously hinders China’s Basic Education Curriculum Reform.The subjects involved in this research were primary school English teachers and Grade 5 students from Daqing area.This study investigated the current situation of English vocabulary teaching in primary schools and explored vocabulary teaching and learning problems,and then proposed the corresponding vocabulary teaching improvement strategies.It will be of great significance to improve the effectiveness of English vocabulary teaching in Daqing Primary Schools.The study mainly used classroom observation and questionnaires.Firstly,through classroom observation,the current English vocabulary teaching in Daqing primary schools was invested.Meanwhile the real teaching of 10 teachers in 6 primary schools were recorded in detail,especially on the vocabulary teaching content,methods and students’ vocabulary learning effects.Secondly,519 valid questionnaires for students and 38 for teachers were collected.The questionnaire for students focused on five aspects: vocabulary learning attitude,vocabulary learning beliefs,vocabulary learning difficulties,choices of vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary learning effect.The questionnaire for teachers focused on four aspects: teachers’ understanding on English Curricular Standards of Compulsory Education(2011 edition),vocabulary learning beliefs,vocabulary teaching methods and vocabulary teaching purpose.Research indicates that pupils in Daqing have low interest in learning vocabulary.It is difficult for them to remember words and use words.Primary school English teachers in Daqing have the one-sided view towards vocabulary teaching.Their vocabulary teaching methods are too simple,and the purpose of vocabulary teaching is not clear.In view of the above problems,and based on the requirements of the English Curricular Standards of Compulsory Education(2011 edition),guided by information processing theory and constructivist teaching theory,this study proposes specific strategies combining theory and practice to improve the effectiveness of English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.It mainly includes six aspects of vocabulary teaching improvement strategies: strengthening voice teaching,paying attention to the use of context,organizing group activities to stimulate vocabulary learning interest,strengthening language skills teaching,cultivating vocabulary application ability,infiltrating cultural awareness and learning strategies in vocabulary teaching.
