Ling Shuhua is a Chinese short story writer in the 20th century, while Katherine Mansfield(hereafter referred to as Mansfield)is a famous short story writer in New Zealand. The two women have been linked ever since Xu Zhimo called Ling Shuhua as"Mansfield of China".The two were compared because they had similar descriptions of delicate and real psychology. However, the similarity is only in the form" but not the"essential".This paper analyzes the differences between spatiotemporal expressions of Ling Shuhua and Mansfield, and free from the title of "Chinese Mansfield".This paper consists of three parts:introduction, body and conclusion. The main contents are as follows:the first part is the introduction.First,it introduces short story works of Ling Shuhua and Mansfield, and then summarizes the research status of Mansfield and Ling Shuhua at home and abroad. Finally,it points out the train of thoughts of the thesis. The second part is the body composed of three sections. The first chapter mainly analyzes how Ling Shuhua and Mansfield use characteristics of women's writing to illustrate the different spatiotemporal characteristics of poetry and painting under the similar theme of "Young Girls' Innocent Expectation of Love".A comparison is drawn between Ling Shuhua's short stories"Eating Tea","After the Tea Party"and Mansfield's short story"The Tiredness of Rosabel",and then different views of love between China and the West are analyzed.Given that Ling Shuhua and Mansfield are more than writers, one is a painter with literati paintings at the same time, and the other one wanted to be a professional cellist, their novels are characterized with spatiotemporal sense of picture and sense of music before they knew it.By the analysis of reference to traditional Chinses painting techniques and the pursuit of artistic conception in Lin Shuhua's novels and the extending psychological time as a result of pursuit of fluidity and rhythm of music in Mansfield's novel, basic features of spatiotemporal paintings and poetry and spatiotemporal concept in deeper level are unfolded. The second section, based on the similar theme of"nostalgic"emotions, mainly analyzes Ling Shuhua's short stories"Goodbye","The Spring"and Mansfield's short stories"A Dill Pickle"and"Psychology".As a landscape painting artist,Ling Shuhua naturally knows individual freedom spirit pursued in literati paintings by heart. She uses sarcasm to remind women to awaken and pursue individual independence when shaping a character.Mansfield's"A Dill Pickle" emphasizes the tone of words to produce a sense of music, and depicts different attitudes of men and women towards feelings, with female writing feature of extremely personal and subjective experience produced by heavy psychological descriptions. The different writing styles of the two generate spatial demonstration of different poetry and painting features and the deep-level spatiotemporal characteristics are analyzed. The third section analyzes dilemma of lonely women in Ling Shuhua's short story"Mr.Li"and Mansfield's short story"Miss Brill"under the theme of"lonely"life.Ling Shuhua believes that women who are bound by feudal ethics of Confucianism such as"ethics in mountain and lake"will fall into circulating fate of tragedy if they are not able to realize that they have the right to pursue an independent individual life.Mansfield,in"Miss Brill",directly reveals that undulation of long and short tone of a sentence has to match the bearing of Miss Brill, thus describing the dilemma of lonely women in want of spiritual support. And this is further analyzed under the different spatiotemporal characteristics of poetry and painting. The third part is the conclusion, which mainly analyzes the ideological roots of the different spatiotemporal characteristics of poetry and painting of Ling Shuhua and Mansfield.Ling Shuhua, influenced by traditional Zhuang Zi's philosophy, shows a circulating view of space and time in her novels, whereas Mansfield lived in a western country that experienced Plato's idealistic world and later gave birth to psychological time from Augustinus's philosophy, and the 20th century is the period in which the West turned to humanism and attached more importance to direct experience that led Mansfield to heavily describe experience brought by psychological time.Different spatiotemporal characteristics of poetry and painting of Ling Shuhua and Mansfield are analyzed based on cultural traditions and reality. Finally, the main contents of this paper are summarized.
