A Report On Interpreting Practice Of The Chuandongbei Plug And Abandonment Project

This paper is a report on interpreting practice of the Chuandongbei Plug and Abandonment Well Project.It is a theoretic discussion on the roles that an interpreter should play and relevant interpreting strategies he adopted in the process of wellsite interpreting practice,aiming to illustrate the author’s hypothesis of an interpreter’s multi-roles.As Chine is speeding up steps into the global stage featuring dynamic international exchanges.Taking the oil and gas industry for example,one can see many Chinese enterprises have strengthened their cooperation with overseas companies and worked hard for bringing in advanced technologies and managerial experience.Responsively,there is an increasing demand for high-level interpreters in oil and gas fields.The author has noticed that interpreters in oil and gas fields should act as information transmitter,coordinator,and facilitator while undertaking the tasks of information transmission,coordination among different contractors and adjustment of obstacles arising from language barriers.Firstly,this paper introduces the interpreting task,the outline and the theory of interpreter’s role,and it then briefly introduces the interpreting task on the basis of the analysis of the original text.This paper focuses on the role of interpreters and the interpreting strategies application in the course of interpreting.Interpreters should first assume the role of “information transmitter” to ensure that the complicated terminology of information is conveyed to the audience correctly;interpreters should also play the role of “coordinator”.In certain scenarios and based on specific circumstances,a stream of methods and strategies should be taken to ensure smooth communication between the two sides in order to achieve operational purposes;interpreters also need to help the speaker convey the correct message.To avoid any accidents,take on the task of “assistant” or “helper.” On the basis of these three roles,the three roles can be brought into play by means of certain interpreting strategies,such as linear interpreting,amplification omission,reorganization and revision.On-site interpreters need to have a clear understanding of their roles in practice,which helps to improve their interpreting performances.It is hoped that this paper will attract the attention of relevant scholars and interpreters,and will possibly provide some insights for the similar interpreting practices.
