An Analysis Of Runaway From The Perspective Of Literary Ethics

Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013.She was awarded the title of “master of the contemporary short story”,and she is also known as “Chekhov of Canada”.The novel collection Runaway is one of her representative works,which is her most prominent label.It vividly reproduces the plain life of people in small towns in Canada and describes the difficulties and complex inner activities of people in the social environment,which bring profound reflection and enlightenment to readers through the daily life of ordinary people.As for the text analysis of Runaway,the research direction is mainly focused on feminism,regional literature,narratology,etc.Only a few academic papers analyze the people?s relationship and events in Runaway from the perspective of literary ethics.With the development of literature,people pay more and more attention to the ethical ideas and values embodied in literary works.This paper,based on the theory of literary ethics,combines the ethical predicament,ethical enlightenment,ethical selection,ethical value and other factors,and combines the specific stories in the text of Runaway to make an in-depth analysis of the ethical issues in this work.This paper mainly discusses the stories in Runaway from the perspectives of gender ethics,family ethics and ethical initiation.The thesis consists of introduction,main body and conclusion.The first part is introduction and it mainly introduces the theoretical basis of this paper,the research status of the works at home and abroad,reasons for selecting this topic,as well as the significance and innovation of this paper.The second part is composed of three chapters.Chapter one respectively analyzes the male and female images in the eight stories,and then discusses the impact of gender ethics on people?s life in Canadian social environment.The solidifying concept of “male superiority and female inferiority” has suppressed women in all aspects of life,tormented them internally and women tried to achieve a state of gender equality through efforts to change actuality.Chapter two analyzes family ethics presented by Munro in the stories.In this chapter,family relationship is subdivided into marital relationship,parent-child relationship and sibling relationship,and the influence of family ethics on relationship development and personal development of family members are discussed.While affirming the traditional family ethics,Munro also shows the shortcomings of traditional family ethics through the fate of characters.The protagonists choose a non-traditional family life and want to establish a modern family ethics,but they are also hindered in the process.Traditional family ethics and modern family ethics have their own advantages and disadvantages,so people need to explore and choose between them in order to find more suitable ethical concepts for contemporary families.Chapter three analyzes the reaction and specific performance of the protagonists in the face of gender ethics and family ethics,focuses on exploring the psychological process of the female in the face of life difficulties,and outlines the growth trajectory of the protagonists from the perspective of ethics.They often fall into ethical predicament due to lack of ethical concern.In the process of encountering all kinds of ethical conflicts,they have to make ethical selections which can reflect their ethical value.Women should pay attention to their own development and value while taking into account their family status.The third part is the conclusion.The conclusion part is a summary of the whole paper,and it summarizes the main points and research value of this paper.The analysis of Runaway from literary ethics enriches the study of Munro?s works.From the perspective of literary ethics,the ethical meaning in Runaway has realistic guiding significance for the contemporary people?s life,and at the same time,it also provides more thinking and enlightenment for people to build a harmonious society.
