May Sarton is a well-known best-selling female author, playwright and poet in the United States. She is the only daughter of science historians George Sarton and Mabel Elwes Sarton. She has more than fifty poems, novels, diaries and memoir creations. At present, domestic and foreign researches have paid attention to the writing of the elderly in May Sarton's books and its realistic ethical value, but they have failed to observe the overall performance of ethical factors in Sarton's literary works from a historical perspective. The excavation of Sarton's novels is not comprehensive enough. This article starts from the perspective of literary ethics, combines myth criticism and narratology criticism, and tries to unearth the new value of Sarton's novels and make it attract more attention. The structure of this article is mainly divided into three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The first chapter of the thesis introduces the ethical environment of May Sarton's novels, starting from Sarton's personal experience, the ethical environment of the elderly in the United States, and the ethics of technology. With the help of May Sarton's personal biography and historical data of the 20 th century in the United States, the ethical environment of the elderly and the ethical environment of technology at that time were restored. In this way,we sort out the trend of mainstream ethical thoughts, clarify the source of May Sarton's ethics, and draw the reasons that self-awakening and humanitarianism are deeply buried in the creation of Sarton's novels.Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 carry out an in-depth textual analysis of the ethics of old age and technology in May Sarton's novels.Mainly focusing on texts such as "As We Are Now","The Birth of A Grandfather" and "Anger",using literary ethics criticism and myth criticism,The narrative techniques, symbolic images and plot connotations in the novel are analyzed. In his novel,Sarton expresses his optimistic attitude that the elderly can know themselves again and rebirth from Nirvana. While demonstrating the ideal old age ethics,it weakens the society's negative impression of aging and death. Moreover, the conflict between humanistic rationality and technical rationality is shown from the omniscience perspective, reflecting the importance of human nature and freedom. It can be seen that Sarton supports a restrained technical ethics centered on humanistic rationality,in order to achieve a society that respects nature and everyone is united and warm. The fourth chapter is about the ethical value of May Sarton's novels. It starts with the analysis from the two dimensions of Sarton's novels: realistic concerns and human nature as passion.Combining with Sarton's evaluation of historical events,it analyzes her concerns and views on realistic political issues in her novels, and explores the ways of shaping moral model images in her novels,as well as the instructive effects of this series of images on readers.
