A Translation Report Of The Recovering(Chapters 1-2)

This paper is a report on the English-Chinese translation of an American newly published book in 2018---The Recovering.written by Leslie Jamison.The author recorded her excessive drinking experience in college,and again was addicted to alcohol when she studied in Yale and Iowa Writers’ Workshop.She tried to get rid of her worries through excessive drinking.The novel discusses the relationship between her writing and her past experience of being indulged in excessive drinking.Along with recounting her own experience on the road to recovery,Jamison also offers her analysis of how various forms of treatments work on recovering addicts.Her analysis of those past writers struggling with their curse of drinking leads to literary achievements as well as what insights these writers provided to the nature of addiction is quite inspiring.This report employs functional equivalence theory to guide the translation.Nida first put forward two concepts:Formal Equivalence and Dynamic Equivalence.In 1969,he put forward the idea of functional equivalence.In order to achieve equivalence at functional level,some translation strategies like addition,class shift were chosen during the translation process.The thesis mainly covers five parts.The first part is the description of this translation task;the second chapter is about translation process;the third chapter is about the functional equivalence theory introduction and its applicability in this report;the fourth part is case analysis under the theory,which mainly focuses on equivalence at lexical level,syntactic level and communicative level;the fifth part is findings and limitations.Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory,proposed by Eugene A Nida in 1960s,the thesis aims to make the original text and the translated text equivalent in aspects.It is hard for the translator to achieve complete equivalence.However,it is possible for the translator to try to make readers of the translated text have the same feeling as readers of the source text after reading.
