| With the globalization of the world,China’s economy has been in its continuous development and people’s demands for science knowledge is becoming more obvious.In recent years,more and more popular science works have been introduced.It not only conveys the relevant science knowledge but also cultivates the scientific thinking methods of readers,which further contributes to the development of science career.Therefore,it is of great importance for us to translate the popular science works.This paper is a practice report on the translation of the introduction and the first chapter of the popular science work The North and South Poles.The book compiled by Diane Andrews Henningfeld has described the environment and resource conditions of the poles and further discusses the sovereignty disputes.This paper will take the translation of the The North and South Poles as an example to analyze the translation process and explore the applicability and necessity of the Skopos Theory in popular science works.Based on the features of popular science works,the paper analyzes the key points and difficulties met in translation process and further discusses the application of its principles of skopos、coherence and loyalty by virtue of the definition of the Skopos Theory.Moreover,in combination with specific cases,suitable translation methods for popular science works have been concluded from lexical and syntactic aspects,such as literal translation,free translation and part-of-speech conversion used in words translation as well as information addition methods,sentences splitting and reorganization and sentence order adjustment for sentences translation.In this way,it is expected that more and more scholars will pay attention to this research and the quality of the translation of popular science works will be improved. |
