Evolution And Transformation:The Research Of Contemporary Chinese Mainland Independent Film

The concept of independent films derived from the United States.And later independent films are used to refer to a type of film creation that exists outside of mainstream production methods.At the beginning of 1990 s,Chinese independent films were produced in the ever-changing social environment in China.The aesthetic characteristics presented by the works are different from that of traditional Chinese films,which is a special cultural phenomenon.The current independent films are different from independent films in 1990 s in terms of the form and content,but the internal independent spirit of independent films lasts till now.This paper tries to sort out the development process and aesthetic style evolution of independent films,so as to interpret the deep meaning of independent films,analyze and extract the independent spirit of independent films.According to the development process of independent films in mainland China,it is divided into three stages.Independent films commenced in the 1990 s,but the national film system made independent films famous at abroad but common at home.In 2003,independent films finally emerged out of the “underground”,were accepted by the national film system but hovered at the margin of the market film system.Since 2010,independent films have gained living space through various approaches such as the exhibitions of independent films,and then independent films have attracted more and more attention.With the change of social and cultural context,the aesthetic style of Chinese mainland independent films has evolved.First of all,it is the conversion of the objects which are the focus of attention.Independent films in the early stage were more likely to present the attention to the marginal individuals and the current independent films focus more on the social thinking.Second,it is the conversion of narrative strategies.The early independent films presented the faded plot and fragmented narration characteristics,but the current independent films are integrated with the categorized elements in terms of narration.Finally,the image style has changed.The early independent films presented the documentary lens language,but for the current independent films,the lens and images are filled with the philosophical metaphors.Independent films in different development stages all show the same independent spirit.The independent spirit of independent films includes three aspects: expression of individual awareness,breakthrough of homogenization and seeking for the realness.The independent spirit is exactly the core spirit of independent films different from other films.In face of the early-stage national film system and the current market film system,independent films are seeking for the survival space.In face of shock from the public culture and challenge from capital power,independent films are sticking to independent creation.The current Chinese films face the transformation period of rapid development,which requires the independent spirit of independent films and the artistic idea of independent films.
