Application Of Parallel Text In Scientific Translation

With the acceleration of globalization,China’s technological exchanges with other countries have become more frequent,and the demand for scientific and technological translation is increasing dramatically.Therefore,Exploring effective translation methods for mechanical texts is crucial to the development of our economy.Based on the author’s translation of Material Selection in Mechanical Design(Fourth Edition),this paper explores the role of parallel texts in translation practice then summarizes and analyze the features and difficulties.Mechanical English has distinctive technical English features.As far as vocabulary and syntactic features are concerned,long sentences and clauses,passive sentence patterns,and scientific vocabulary are used.In terms of rhetorical methods,mechanical English focuses on presenting objective facts,using the declarative sentence,imperative sentences,and omission of some function words,so as to be concise and accurate.This material is also regarded as an entry-level textbook for mechanical design in foreign countries.Under the guidance and help of authoritative parallel texts,the author summarizes the characteristics of mechanical English texts,greatly improves the author’s translation quality and translation efficiency,and draws some translation strategies and experiences.In this practice report,the author aimed at the problems and difficulties of terms,nesting clauses,measurement units during the translation and made a comparison between the first translation and the revised translation.This paper discusses the guiding role of parallel texts in scientific translation from the perspectives of the features of mechanical English,the professionalization of target text,the conciseness of the target text and the standardization of the target text.The author introduces the meaning of parallel texts,the source of parallel texts,how to search for parallel texts,and how to guide translation practice in multiple ways.With the help of high-quality parallel texts,the author’s understanding of the original text is more profound in the translation practice,and the target text is more concise and professional,so as to achieve the expected translation goals.Through the project translation and report writing,the following conclusions are drawn:the translation of mechanical texts is an interdisciplinary activity,the translator should have solid translation skills,but also a certain degree of mechanical expertise.The utilization of authoritative parallel texts can improve the accuracy of the target language and the standardization of language and form to a certain extent,to provide effective references for translators,improve the quality of the target text and achieve certain communicative purposes.The author hopes that the guiding effect of parallel texts on mechanical texts in this paper can bring some enlightenment to mechanical translation researchers and provide a new perspective for more translators and practitioners of machinery.
