The development of Western music cannot be separated from religious music,while Requiem its important part.Since the origin,Requiem has evolved greatly in terms of the content and style.From the very beginning as ritual music in churches,it has gradually been separated from the religious events,involved into aesthetics art and become a kind of non-ritual music style,which is also an important genre of Western music.Gabriel Fauréis a famous French composer and organist in the late 19th century.His Requiem as well as Mozart and Verdi’s Requiem are also called the three greatest Requiems.Through the unique choice of etiquette texts and composition techniques,Fauréskillfully integrated his conception of death into this iconic work,which entitled his Requiem with his individual color and the core idea that redemption comes from the grace of God rather than the judgment of God.Therefore,his style is emotional,esthetical and restrained.The thesis firstly goes through the characteristics of genre and texts of this Requiem,then analyzes the background of Fauré’s composition and music style,and discusses conductor’s control and treatment in the macro and detailed sense.Moreover,the style and characteristics should be researched in order to provide theoretical evidence for better understanding and interpretation of Fauré’s Requiem.
