This translation practice report is based on the linguistics monograph An Introduction to Sociolinguistics(the Third Edition)by Ronald Wardhaugh,professor of University of Toronto,Canada.This book covers almost all aspects of sociolinguistics and the latest research on sociolinguistics theories at that time,which is of reference value for linguistics learners.Acquiring certain linguistic knowledge,understanding the generality and rules of language will certainly contribute to translation practice.The last four chapters are translated by the author.The author explains the source text,the purpose and significance of translation in the first chapter,and then introduces the translation theories and strategies in the second chapter.In Chapter 3,the translation process and the problems encountered in the process are explained in detail.In Chapter 4,the difficulties in the translation practice are classified,summarized,analyzed and solutions are proposed.The fifth chapter summarizes the whole translation practice report.At the same time,the author draws relevant conclusions and thinks that Skopostheorie can solve the problems in translation practice,but it also has some defects.In the whole process of translation,the author takes Vermeer's Skopostheorie as the guidance.Skopostheorie includes the Skopos rule,coherence rule and the fidelity rule.The author,on the basis of a fully understanding of the original text and its intention,adopts the foreignizing and domesticating translation strategies to complete the translation of An Introduction to Sociolinguistics.In the process of translation,translation techniques such as extension of meaning,addition,conversion,linear translation,division,transformation from the passive voices to the active voices,lexical cohesion and reference are used to solve the problems.After finishing this translation practice report,the author hopes to give full excess to language lovers and provides references for translators.
