| Gold and bronze Buddha,which is a primary category of Buddhist statues,plays an important role in ancient Chinese Buddhism activities.The Guanzhong area,served as a political,economic and cultural communication center in the Tang Dynasty,preserves more than 600 pieces gold and bronze Buddhist statues,which provides significant reference for recent archaeological research of Buddhist Statues.This study aims to conduct an archaeological research by taking the gold and bronze Buddhist statues of Tang Dynasty as object.Firstly,in terms of the content of statues,this study divides the traditional Buddhist Statues into two categories: the Gold and Bronze Buddha and the Gold and Bronze Bodhisattva.Through the physical characteristics of various statues,the gold and bronze Buddha is further divided into three types: the statue of sitting Buddha,the statue of standing Buddha,and the statue of half sitting Buddha.Also,the gold and bronze Bodhisattva is divided into the sacred Bodhisattva,the semi-squatting Bodhisattva,and the sitting Bodhisattva.On the basis of classification,this study summarizes the characteristics of various types of statues,and divides the development of the Gold and Bronze Buddha and the Gold and Bronze Bodhisattva into three stages respectively.Thus,the relationships among the characteristics of the gold and bronze Buddhist statues in the Tang Dynasty,local cultural traditions,and foreign cultural factors are discussed in this study.In addition,the connection between the Bronze statues of Tang Dynasty and the other regions in the same period is clarified.This study finally draws the conclusion that the implications for the future research of the Bronze statues of the Tang Dynasty in the Guanzhong area. |
