| Driven by the advances of nanotechnology and precision medicine,academic achievements in the field of biomedical engineering have increasingly emerged,making the study of domestic biotech-related document translation to gain momentum.This practice report mainly discusses the Chinese-English translation of “Progress of Nanoparticles Inhibiting Tumor Metastasis”.The source text,which falls into the category of common scientific and technical texts,is characterized by both the scientific nature and the artistic nature.To retain these two natures of the source text,proper translation techniques are chosen from lexical-syntactic,textual and rhetorical levels under the guidance of Jef Verschueren’s adaption theory,including adaption to language structure,discourse coherence and pragmatic style.In the case analysis,it is found that as for the language structure adaption,such techniques as “the use of compound words”,“the omission of redundant words” and “the employment of separate construction” make the translation concise and clear.In terms of the discourse coherence adaption,techniques like “the addition of conjunctions” and “the adjustment of word order” render the translation logical and well-knit.With regard to the pragmatic style adaption,techniques including “the retention of positive rhetoric”and “the use of parallelism” make the translation vivid and fluent.Conciseness,clarity and logicality are essential to the scientific nature of the target text,whereas vividness and fluency are essential to the artistic nature of the target text.Through the translation practice,it can be concluded that sci-tech texts do not totally exclude artistic nature,although they put more emphasis on sending scientific information.Hence,merely conveying the content objectively and accurately in the process of translation is not enough.It is also necessary to retain the artistic nature adaptively without violating its scientific nature,according to the cultural context of the target language and the reading habits of the target readers.It is hoped that this report can be a reference to other translation of common scientific and technical texts. |
