A Report On The E-C Translation Of Patents For Automotive Lighting Devices

In the information age today,various inventive technologies emerge endlessly.The status of enterprises in their respective fields is closely related to their own patent quality and quantity,thus,the role of translation is indispensable.The main translation texts of patent application documents include claims and instructions.The former is characterized by the preciseness of legal documents,such as the legally regulated fixed expression.The latter is characterized extensively by scientific and technological knowledge,such as the correct expression of technical terms.So,patent translation requires not only foreign language competence and also relevant law knowledge and technical background.This paper is a practical report on English-Chinese patent translation of automotive lighting device,and it is divided into four parts: the first chapter is the introduction,which introduces the status and significance of patent translation;the second chapter is the project process including pre-translation preparation and translation process to make professional preparations for the successful completion of the whole translation;the third chapter is the case study,which mainly focuses on the lexical,the syntactic and the textual level to make a comprehensive analysis of the translation material;the fourth chapter is the summary.This paper,which started from the linguistic features of patent instructions,shows the improvement of patent translation by the learning of parallel texts and common expressions and the summing up of the experience of translation strategies.At the same time,through deepening the understanding of the patent text,different translation techniques are applied to achieve an ideal translation effect in view of the translation of legal and technical aspects in the text.
