| During the period of the Republic of China,a large number of newspapers and magazines related to the content of marriage and love allowed researchers to combine with letters from readers,to explore the urban men and women’s ideas and concepts of marriage,family and love in the 1920 s and 1940 s.On the basis of previous studies,this paper intends to start with the social background,marriage and family system,the general situation of newspaper and magazine mailbox columns and the specific situation embodied in the contents of letters.The development of new education,the change of social system and the development of economy are the basis for the formation of a new concept of love and marriage among young people in Shanghai.Different educational background,different family background,different career and life experience are also important conditions for its formation.On this basis,according to "Linglong Mailbox","West Wind Mailbox" and "Life" weekly "Reader Mailbox",697 letters can be found,including 252 letters on marriage and love topics and rich content.The main body of letters includes male and female workers,male and female students,family women and other types.The time of letters spanned nearly 17 years from 1925 to 1941.By combing the main contents of the letter,and supplemented by quantitative statistics,it presents the general situation of the concept of marriage and love of men and women in Shanghai at that time.According to the contents of the letters,urban women of different social identities have obvious differences in the concept and behavior of spouse selection.Among them,economically independent female employees have more independent and wise thoughts of marriage and love.As far as family women are concerned,their marital life depends entirely on their husbands and their husband’s family environment.Even if there are relevant laws to protect their rights and interests in marital life,there are fewer active divorce petitioners.Compared with the concept of love and marriage of young women,the formation and development of the concept of love and marriage of young men in Shanghai during the Republic of China highlighted the influence of social change.The diversification ofsurvival and life pressure promotes the change of male youth’s concept of spouse selection.At the same time,fertility was still the focus of marriage for young men in the Republic of China. |
