The source text comes from Teaching and researching:Motivation published by Longman in 2011 under the authorship of Prof.Zoltán D?rnyei and Prof.Ema Ushioda,two renowned scholars in second language learning motivation.Typical of academic texts,this book discusses in details constructs and theoretical models of second language learning motivation.It also points out the current challenges and future development for motivation research in second language learning,thus providing useful theoretical and research guidance for scholars.This report is based on the English-to-Chinese translation of Chapter One?whole?and Chapter Two?excerpt?of Teaching and researching:Motivation(the 2nd edition).Chapter One of the book introduces the definitions of motivation and reviews the history of motivation studies.The second chapter explores various definitions and models of motivation in psychology.Following the principle of functional equivalence by Nida,the translator adopted a variety of strategies in dealing with translation challenges.On the lexical level,the translator made use of relevant literature to translate terms in the source text.He also handled polysemy and synonym juxtaposition by analyzing the specific textual context.On the syntactic level,the translator used segmentation and reconstruction to transform the long complex sentences in English into simplex Chinese.At the same time,he tried to reproduce the strict logic in the original text by adding rhetorical devices.On the stylistic level,the translator conducted functional analysis of the special type of texts in the source text and converted them into their corresponding expressions in Chinese.Besides,the translator consulted reference books and dictionaries in translating names of scholars in the source text by regarding widely-accepted Chinese translation of names as first choice and attempting to reflect the cultural background of scholars.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One outlines the background and significance of the translation project as well as the layout of the report.Chapter Two analyzes the source text in terms of contents and linguistic styles.Chapter Three illustrates the translation principle and describes the working process.Chapter Four analyzes the difficulties in translation and illustrates their solutions with examples.Chapter Five concludes the report with the reflection of the translator and the limitations of the project.
