The Naming Characteristics And Reason Of Xian City Gate From The Perspective Of Cultural Linguistics

City wall serving as the military barrier plays an important role in the ancient times.As the symbol of the city,city gate is the main channels of connecting both the inside and outside.Both of them represent the prestige of the city and miniature of social and cultural developmental process.However,the naming of the city gate reflects the politic,economy and culture of certain historical times.Thus,it is necessary to study this phenomenon today.This study aims to explore the relationships between the naming of city gate and its culture in Xi’an by means of analyzing the naming principle of Xi’an,Beijing and Nanjing horizontally.This thesis consists of five chapters.Introduction part demonstrates the research participant,research theory and research methods.The participants of this thesis are the name city gate of Xi’an,Beijing and Nanjing.The author applies the theory of cultural linguistics and the method of comparative induction,as well as documentation analysis to show the theme of the thesis.Chapter 1 introduces name city gate of Xi’an,Beijing and Nanjing in terms of the number,historical background,the origin of the city gate and its development.Chapter 2 analyzes the word formation and semantic change of name city gate of Xi’an,Beijing and Nanjing form the perspective of linguistics.Chapter 3 sorts out and compares the cultural representation of the name city gate of Xi’an,Beijing and Nanjing so as to explain what the cultural connotations of Xi’an city gate name carry on.Chapter 4 reveals the characteristics and the reason of Xi’an city name according to the feature of language and culture of Xi’an.
