A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Wosa Under The Perspective Of Peter Newmark’s Typology Theory

In recent years,along with the rapid development of science and technology in China,the number of patent applications has been increasing gradually,and more and more Chinese patent applications request international protections on intellectual property rights,so as to enter the international market.The Written Opinion of International Searching Authorities(WOSA)is a document issued by an international initial examination authority(i.e.the intellectual property authority in the country where a patent application belongs to)for evaluating whether the patent application complies with the novelty,the inventive step and the industrial applicability under the Patent Cooperation Treaty(PCT)Article.According to PCT,WOSA in corresponding languages are necessary for a patent application going into the international stage,and therefore,the translation of WOSA is of great significance for the patent application to obtain the international protection on the intellectual property right.This report adopts Peter Newmark’s typology theory to determine the text type and translation requirements of WOSA,analyzes the problems occurred during translation practice,and according to the text type and functions of WOSA,provides corresponding solutions under the guidance of the communicative translation strategy.In this report,the translation problems are analyzed from the lexical level and the syntactic level,and problems including terminology mistranslation,inaccurate polysemy translation,the failure in weak verb translation,logic relationship ambiguity and the failure in translation of sentences without subjects are proposed,specific examples are given,and based on the communicative translation strategy,solutions including reconstruction,adaptation,conversion,division and addition are provided.Since WOSA are of high confidentiality,and there are few studies on the translation of WOSA,this practice report is expected to provide reference for WOSA translation in the future.
