| Vocabulary learning is an important part of English learning.Vocabulary is a fundamental basis of English sentences.Wilikins(1972)pointed out “Without vocabulary,nothing can be conveyed”.The Full-time Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards(2012)also emphasizes the importance of vocabulary learning.Although teachers and students know the importance of English vocabulary,the current situation of vocabulary teaching and learning in rural junior middle school is still unsatisfying.The vocabulary teaching and learning remains time-consuming and inefficient.For students,the difficulty in memorizing words has become one of the biggest problems for their English learning.Mind map is a visual knowledge representation tool.It encourages learners to make deeper levels of information process and helps them reorganize the memory effectively.The aim of this thesis is to explore the influence of mind map on rural junior middle school students’ vocabulary memory.This thesis mainly explores the following three problems:(1)What influence does the application of mind map have on students’ long-term memory of vocabulary in rural junior middle school?(2)What influence does the application of mind map have on students’ English performance in rural junior middle school?(3)What influence does the application of mind map have on students’ vocabulary memory strategies in rural junior middle school? The author selects two parallel classes(68 and 69 Class)as the research subjects in Xiangling Nine-year Education School.They are Grade Seven students.And the author conducts an18-week teaching experiment in the EC.Students in the EC use mind maps to remember words,while students in the CC use word lists to remember words.The main methods used in this thesis are questionnaire survey,interview and experimental method.In order to solve research questions,the author uses four research instruments.They are tests,vocabulary dictation tests,questionnaire and interview.The experimental data were conducted by SPSS 21.0,the the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)The application of mind map to vocabulary memory can improve students’ long-term memory of vocabulary.(2)The application of mind map to vocabulary memory is conducive to improve students’ English performance.(3)The application of mind map to vocabulary memory has a positive impact on students’ vocabulary memory strategies,but it is impossible to influence all vocabulary memory strategies.This study found that mind map as a learning tool is effective to memorize vocabulary.However,due to the limited experimental time and the small number of samples,there are still some limitations in this experiment.The application of mind map to English teaching and learning is beneficial for teachers and students,and it is worthy for further research in the future. |
