| With the increasingly deepening of Chinese and foreign cultures, the novel translation has become one of the most popular ways in cultural exchanges. The novel,as a special literature style, embodies the personality and the fate of characters, shows the complex plots, and reveals the complicated social relations, which give the readers a wider and more comprehensive social experience. The translator has a keen interest in novels, especially the realistic novels. Therefore, the realistic novel of Over Hill and Dale, written by Gervase Phinn,is chosen as the translation materials for this report. The translator selects chapters 1-4 of Over Hill and Dale as the translation text.In order to enhance the vitality of language expression,(He,2011:2)Gervase Phinn uses various rhetorical devices, such as simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, etc.to polish the language and retain readers? interests. In the light of Mr.Yu Lisan?s classification of rhetoric devices, the translator makes a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the lexical, syntactical and phonetic rhetorical devices in the text.(Yu,1985)This report begins with the language features of Over Hill and Dale, explores corresponding rhetoric in the text, and talks about how to both confirm with the novel?s features and gives the target language readers the same emotional appeal as the source language ones.In addition, the translation strategies are the key parts of the report. In the process of translation, how to understand and translate the rhetoric devices are the difficulties that the translator must face. When translating, the translator adopts the translation strategies of the literal translation, replacement, compensation and abandoning to cope with these rhetoric devices.Through this translation practice, the translator holds the view that the translation of novels should rely on the textual characteristics of the original text, and at the same time, social, culture and mental factors should take into account, too.Hopefully, the target readers read the text with the same degree of interest as the source language readers(Newmark,2001:48).The translator hopes to improve the quality of novel translation as well as provide a reference for translation of the same or similar topics. |
