Against the backdrop of growing economic globalization,China is now ready to further open its market for trade and investment, leading to a higher demand for translating Chinese investment reports into English.Parallel texts, which are defined as authentic and nontranslated texts chosen from the target-culture text repertoire, serve as a source of cultural and linguistic information during the translation process. In practice, however,a lot of translators have encountered some difficulties concerning the use of parallel texts. As a case study of the translation of Deloitte’s investment reports, this thesis primarily deals with the challenges concerning the collection and use of parallel texts. There are two reasons that may cause difficulties in collecting parallel texts: culture-specific expressions and unclear main functions of the source text.Due to the possibly poor quality, different communicative purposes, and varied language styles of parallel texts, translators may take more time than expected to deliver a proper translation. The challenges mentioned above remind translators to: a)resort to the parallel corpus as needed;b)divide the source text into varied search units as appropriate;c)pay attention to the source of parallel texts for quality evaluation thus to make reasonable use of them;d)identify the real information of the source text to serve its communicative purpose;and e)try to reproduce the source text’s language style in the target language without any missing information. It is hoped that this thesis will provide translators with some useful ideas on the translation of Chinese investment reports.
