Study On Roles Of Interpreters In Press Conferences Of NPC And CPPCC From The Perspective Of Goffman’s Participation Framework

As an intercultural communication,interpreting has always been concerned by the interpreting circles.As main characters in interpreting activities,interpreters have always been controversial,especially those in diplomatic affairs.Due to political sensitivity,interpreters on that occasions not only represent speakers,but also for the image of countries.Therefore,the study of roles played by interpreters in diplomatic occasions is particularly important.With the development of interpreting studies and interdisciplinary studies concerning interpreting,scholars have come to realize that roles of interpreters are not single.In fact,roles of interpreters are complex and diverse in constant changes.An American sociologist Goffman in his Participation Framework holds that all participants will assume one or more roles during the conversation,thereby forming a framework for participation in the discourse network.The Production Format proposed in Participation Framework deconstructs the role of “speaker” and provides an analytical framework for the complex roles of interpreters in interpreting activities.This thesis combines interpreting studies with Goffman’s Participation Framework,adopting three-year consecutive interpreting material of Press Conferences during Two Sessions in the year of 2017,2018 and 2019 to discuss the three main roles of the interpreter as “animator”,“author” and “principal”.In addition,based on the three typical roles,the thesis further extends the role of “author” and “principal” to eight subroles,innovatively studies their typical sub-roles,overlapping roles and analyzes motivations from the perspective of linguistics,society and culture,designing to promote people’s understanding of complex roles that interpreters play on diplomatic occasions.
