The Roles Of Interpreter Under Participation Framework

The role of the interpreter has always been a popular research area.As interpreting theory evolves,scholars have gradually realized that interpreters are by no means passive "conduits" or "invisible".The interpreter conveys messages from one language to another.What’s more,he or she plays the role of "coordinator" or "gatekeeper",actively participating in dialogues and promoting cross-cultural communication.This report explores the role of the interpreter under Goffman’s sociological theory—Participation Framework.The data is a transcript from an online business matchmaking at the 25 th China International Fashion Week.The practice report analyzes how the interpreter interacted with the interlocutors and different roles she played in the business matchmaking.Case analysis shows that the interpreter not only served as "animator" and "author",but also played the role of "principal" and“unaddressed recipient”.Moreover,the interpreter constantly adjusted her role and stance given the actual situation and the speaking style of the interlocutors.The author hopes that this practical report can enrich research settings on interpreter roles and provide reference to off-site interpreting on similar occasions.
