As a major input approach of language learning, reading is of vital importance in the language skills training. In discussion of "reading" and "viewing" skills,The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 edition)advocates students to develop their multimodal reading and writing skills by understanding multimodal texts, creating context and increasing interest. Therefore, the proposal of “multiliteracy” training objective makes the multimodal teaching an inevitable trend. On the basis of the Multimodal Discourse Analysis Theory and Krashen’s Comprehensible Input Hypothesis, and by referring to the relevant research results of multimodal teaching and English reading teaching, this study designs multimodal English reading teaching activities and implements multimodal English teaching experiments to answer the following two questions:(1)What are the effects of multimodal teaching on senior high school students’ English reading motivation?(2)What are the effects of multimodal teaching on senior high school students’ English reading comprehension? In this study, the subjects are 110 students from two parallel classes in grade two of a senior high school in Yueyang City, and the whole teaching experiment lasted for 16 weeks.Multimodal reading teaching was conducted in the experimental class, while regular English reading teaching was adopted in the control class. This study combined qualitative research methods and quantitative research methods.English reading comprehension test, the questionnaire, and the interview were successively carried out in the experiment. And in this study,SPSS 23.0 software was used for statistical analysis of experimental data and discussion of research issues. The research findings are as follows:(1)Multimodal teaching is beneficial to positively changing students’ English reading motivation, which can effectively stimulate their interest and enthusiasm to participate in communication and interaction.(2)Multimodal teaching has an obvious promoting effect on the improvement of students’ English reading comprehension, which helps students enhance their understanding of discourse and broaden their knowledge scope. This research has demonstrated that multimodal teaching is of effectiveness and feasibility, and it can bring positive effects to the English reading motivation and English reading comprehension of senior high school students. On one hand, teachers should make use of multimodal teaching and create an ideal learning environment and atmosphere to stimulatestudents’ English reading motivation. On the other hand, teachers should properly select and integrate a variety of modalities to broaden students’ cultural knowledge and ultimately cultivate their multimodal reading and writing ability.
