Wenxin Diaolong is the first systematic literary critical work in China, which is regarded as a typical sample of Chinese literary criticism by western translators. The English translation of Wenxin Diaolong is a complex process of creation in intertextuality and polyphony. The exploration of the mysteries of this process can contribute to the pursuit of the fundamental reasons for the differences of translation and the deep cultural refraction of Chinese culture behind Western interpretation. It also contributes to promote the exchange and interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, and further promotes the prosperity and development of world culture. This thesis mainly based on two English translation versions of Wenxin Diaolong, selects intertextuality and polyphony theories to further analyse the process of translation. This thesis finds that translation, with the source language as the object, the cultural context as the background and the reader as the goal,is a multiple interaction, communication and dialogue between writers, translators and readers.Stephen Owen, regarding the reader as the center when he deals with the intertextuality of the key terms, takes the western culture as the destination. He compares the intertextuality with the western culture and uses domestication translation strategy to bury the intertextuality of the source text;however,he tries to use alienation translation when he deals with the polyphony structure in order to achieve the reader's heart and soul resonance.Yang Guobin also takes the reader as the center, but his ultimate goal is to transmit Chinese culture. Therefore,he uses alienation translation to retain the intertextuality of the source text, and lets the readers think, comprehend and understand so as to reach mutual harmony with the author. He simplifies the polyphonic structure and reduces the demand for readers' imagination. The conclusion is that the translation re-endows the translated work with an independent identity affirms the interaction between translationand creation and dissolves the overemphasis on faithfulness or equivalence. The translator carries out a dialogue across time and space with the author of the original text, shouldering the responsibility of connecting the original text and bringing up the translated text,so that the reader and the author of the original meet.
